Question by Megan: What do I need to go to France on my own?
I am going to Paris with my aunt in 2 weeks. I am traveling alone, from Canada, and I am 14. What kind of documentation will I need? What should I pack for clothes? How much money should I bring? What questions should I ask my aunt about where we’re staying (The apartment, the neighborhood[arrondissement], sightseeing plans), and questions I should ask about travel arrangements (Do I need to take the train from the airport to a metro station, is she meeting me at the airport, do I go straight to the apartment she’s renting, am I getting a metro pass/metro tickets). What are emergency numbers, where is the nearest hospital/clinic/ER, where is the Canadian embassy, and do you have any friends in the area I can get help from if I need it.

And if there’s anything else I should ask, or know, please let me know. Also, if you know a website where I can find this info, that would be great. Even a partial answer is great. I would rather have 5 partial answers than 2 almost complete answers.

Documentation: I have a passport, and my learner’s (I live in Alberta, and it is government issued ID)
Clothes: What kind of weather to pack for, specific styles, ect.
Money: Just for personal shopping (I might get a spouse card of my mum’s visa card), and how much cash should I take out/carry with me.
French: I am fairly fluent in french (French from K-8), and I have applications on my ipod, that I’ve used, and that help (a little). What should I be expecting from customs agents, and which forms (if any) do I need to fill out (My parents usually get these little red forms when we travel to Hawaii, but I’m not sure what they’re for, and if I have to fill it out, or if I don’t have to talk to customs if I fill it out)
Travel: I’ve traveled on my own, (6 flights, Vancouver to Calgary), and I am fairly comfortable traveling on my own. I have a connecting flight in Toronto (Pearson) on the way to Paris (Charles de Gaulle), and through Montreal (Trudeau) on the way back. I am flying with Air Canada. Will I have to take my luggage back to the check in desk, will I likely be changing terminals (Only a problem for Pearson), and what should I expect if I ask an airport staff member/flight attendant for help.

THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR RESPONSE!

Documentation: Just your passport

Airport: ask your Aunt to meet you the airport in Paris, she should offer to do this anyway. I’m guessing you’ll arrive and depart from Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). When you check-in for your return flight, ask if your luggage can be checked through to home. If not, then you’ll have to collect at baggage claim at the next airport and re-check. But just ask airport staff if you’re worried about this. They are there to help and will do everything possible to make your flights easier.

Clothes: it’s summer in France so take summer clothing with some warm clothing as the weather can sometimes get cool in Paris. French girls dress a little more conservatively than their North American counterparts. So you might find that low cut tops are not always acceptable, and most girls only wear shorts at the beach. But, with the huge number of tourists in Paris, you could easily get away with wearing just what you wear at home in summer.

The important thing is not to stress out about what your wearing, but to have fun and enjoy being in a different country. Just soak up the atmosphere and culture.

Question by raj: Do we need to check in luggage at terminal 6 for Jet blue flight after coming to terminal 4 at JFK from India?
My parents are visiting me from India and they are flying Air India from Mumbai to JFK. It lands at terminal 4. After immigration, they need to catch Jet Blue flight for their final destination which flies out of terminal 6.
Can they check in their luggage at terminal 4 after immigration/customs clearance or do they need to carry luggage to terminal 6 and check in there? Has anybody experienced this before?
